Experience Born and raised in the midwest. Started tinkering with engines when I was about 14 on my Suzuki RM-80. I began lawn mower repair at a small hardware store. I knew absolutely nothing. I read lots of repair manuals and met an older fellow who taught me many lessons. I continued working on small engines through high school and paid my way through college working on mowers at the same hardware store. Decided to get away from the midwest and mower repair so I joined the Air Force. I repaired air traffic control electronic equipment and ended up in Hawaii where I got a part time job at Small Engine Clinic. I gained a lot of experience from the Small Engine Clinic and had a blast repairing small engines. I then took the Briggs and Stratton Master Service Technician test and earned my MST. I then traveled to Wisconsin where I attended the factory update training seminar and received formal training. I received a scholarship from the Air Force and am currently pursuing another degree.

Subject: camshaft bushing roll pin removal/replacement
Question QUESTION: I am working on a briggs and stratton vanguard 16 hp horizontal shaft engine. To make a long story short, it was making a funny sound and I thought that the camshaft bushing was worn. After driving it out, I found that there is a roll pin in the oil port. What do I need to do to remove the old roll pin and install a new one? The service manual diagrams and information was not clear to me.

QUESTION: It is a briggs and stratton 16 hp vanguard horizontal shaft. Model number 303447 Type 1026a1 serial number 95090811.

ANSWER: Do you have the Briggs and Stratton V-Twin Cylinder OHV Engine repair manual part number 272144?
I checked chapter 11, Cylinder and Bearing, and the manual says to replace the cylinder or crankcase if cam bearings are worn.
Is the pin you are referring to located on the cam shaft or is the pin located in the engine block or crankcase cover?

QUESTION: Eric,
I don't know the part number of the book I read. I used it at the local parts and repair center, and it was the correct one for this engine. The roll pin is in the engine block. There is a port that runs from the top of the block down to the camshaft and then continues under the end of the crankshaft. On top of the block it looks like a 1/4 inch ball bearing is driven into the block to seal the hole. If this was removable in some way, the pin can be driven straight through to the crankshaft bearing hole, but the ball doesn't seem like it can be removed. The roll pin is between the camshaft and crankshaft bearing and is set out into the camshaft bearing to stop it from being spun. The diagrams were not clear enough in the manual. It almost seemed like you were supposed to install a new roll pin and leave the old one in the port.

Answer Check Ebay or you local Briggs dealer for the Briggs book. They discuss a roll pin in the main crank bearing.
I'd scan the page but my scanner is broke.
Have you tried sweet talking you local Briggs dealer to see if you can see the manual or get them to copy the page for you? I'd also check to see if they have a manual in stock. Often times the manuals are less than $20.00
