About Eric A. Jones
Expertise Lawnmower Repair . Certified Master Service Technician from B&S. Have 13 years experience on B&S, Lawn Chief, Weed Eater, Echo, Peerless, Wheel Horse, Snapper, Atlas, MTD, McCulloch, Homelite and many other numerous brands. Specialize in electrical repair.
Experience Born and raised in the midwest. Started tinkering with engines when I was about 14 on my Suzuki RM-80. I began lawn mower repair at a small hardware store. I knew absolutely nothing. I read lots of repair manuals and met an older fellow who taught me many lessons. I continued working on small engines through high school and paid my way through college working on mowers at the same hardware store. Decided to get away from the midwest and mower repair so I joined the Air Force. I repaired air traffic control electronic equipment and ended up in Hawaii where I got a part time job at Small Engine Clinic. I gained a lot of experience from the Small Engine Clinic and had a blast repairing small engines. I then took the Briggs and Stratton Master Service Technician test and earned my MST. I then traveled to Wisconsin where I attended the factory update training seminar and received formal training. I received a scholarship from the Air Force and am currently pursuing another degree.

Expert: Eric A. Jones - 11/10/2009
Question I have a B&S 18hp twin cylinder engine, that I was told the fuel pump needed repaired. I replaced the two springs and the 2 rubber gaskets?, and am still having the same problem the engine will only run when either spraying starting fulid or pouring gas into the carb, mod# 422707, type 1214 01, code 9408125B.
This is in a PowerKraft Mod# TMO 3400005A, 135Q699H088
Ser# 1A305H20175 I was told this mower was built by MTD, but I don't know if this is true.
However my question is, there is a vaccum? line comming from the engine under the carb and going into the fuel pump, I have cranked the motor over with the key while holding my finger over the end of this hose and felt very little suction, should there be very much suction on this hose, is there a way to measure it. ?
Thank you

Answer There is not much vacuum on the pulse-line. Briggs does not publish specifications for measuring any vacuum/pressure as the reading vary across engines. Bottom line, the fuel pump needs very little vacuum to operate.
Did you check the parts list diagram to make sure the diaphragms and gaskets are in the correct location?

Were there two little spring and one larger spring with a cap for the spring?
With the carburetor mounted on the engine, can you remove the top of the carburetor? Some carbs you could remove the top of the carb and then actually watch the fuel pump fill the carb when cranking the engine.
Did you replace the actual fuel pump diapharm? Does you carb have an electronic fuel shut-off solenoid?
Let me know.
Eric
