won't start, fuel will leak from the main valve on bottom of carb bowl if primed

If the bottom of the float bowl is where the fuel is leaking from,there should be a small gasket on the bowl nut.Maybe when you rebuilt the carburetor if was not installed. The other problem could be that float is not adjusted correctly that will cause fuel to flow and not shut off by the float and the needle or the needle seat. Recheck the carb again.
