Question battery keeps going dead. installed new battery last week and already dead. tried mowing tonight and i had to jump it every 5 minutes. dies while mowing. 2007 xg2703 classic with 27hp generac engine. less than 70hrs on it.
Answer Hi Joe:
If your new battery is good and not defective, I would say you have a charging system problem-constant drain on the battery. It could be something as simple as a regulator/rectifier or may actually be the alternator which is a labor intensive job to replace.
Lets try a couple of tests
Charge your battery fully, take a DC volt reading. Leave the battery sit for 24 hours, take another reading. Is the voltage still the same?
Better yet, take t he battery back to where you bought it and have them perform a load test on the battery to make sure it is fine.
Once we know the battery is good and reinstalled back into the mower-With the ignition in the OFF position, remove the NEGATIVE (Black) battery cable. Do you see any signs of sparking at the battery terminal, If you do there is a "Drain" on the battery which we need to determine. This drain could be a defective keyswitch, regulator, or shorted stator/alternator. You will need to use a systematic approach to figure this one out.
Start the engine up, remove the negative battery cable, Does the engine keep running? Does it quit? Engage the Electric clutch, does it work? If the charging system is functioning properly the engine should continue to run UNLESS there is a wire running to the bottom of the carburetor.
Give these things a try and let me know what you find
