About P.K. Jones
Expertise
I can answer most questions about commercial and residential outdoor equipment. I can also help with questions about import atv's, Karts and scooters. I can't help you with generator electrical output however if it's an engine problem, I'm more than happy to help. I'm in the South, so snowblowers and snowmobiles are outside of my area of knowledge. If it's a question about the engine on a snowblower I can help. But I'm just not familiar with the drive systems for snowblowers.

Experience
I own Grand Junction Small Engines and Grandjunctionsmallengines.com, a full service shop and national parts sales site. My shop is an Authorized Repair Center for many brands and we work on equipment from most manufacturers. We are also a dealer and service center for several lines of outdoor sports products such as atv's, utv's and Karts. Personally, I have over 25 years experience working with small engines and outdoor power equipment.

Education/Credentials
I've attended many small engine and power equipment factory schools and seminars. I average 100 plus hours annually in update schools and specialized training schools and am current on all brands my shop is authorized to do warranty and factory service on.

Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.) - smoking lawnmower

Expert: P.K. Jones - 7/4/2009

Question
Mr Jones, i have a craftsman 6.5 Briggs engine self propelled lawnmower.when 1st started it sends a puff of smoke out of the muffler.after that it runs fine, no smoke whats going on.also would you recommend a top of the line commercial weed trimmer

Answer
Maruyama and Robin are the best weedeaters there are.  I say that not only because I sell Maruyama, but because I used them for many years commercially and know many people who still do and they are simply the best.  I would buy a Maruyama because they also have a five year commercial use warranty that is very comprehensive.

As for the smoking mower, I imagine you have a little oil seeping past the rings or a valve while the engine sits.  This in and of itself isn't really a problem but it may be telling you that wear is becoming an issue.  If it reaches the point where it's fouling the plug or smoking constantly, I would be concerned.  As for now, regular oil changes, regular air filter replacement, not cleaning, replacement, and taking care not to overheat the engine would be the course to take.  Thanks, PK.
