Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.) - GCV160 leaks fuel after shutdown

Expert: John C. Bridgers Sr. - 7/2/2007

Question
My Honda GCV160 leaks fuel from the choke-side of the carburetor and into the air cleaner assembly after the engine is shut off.  Usually it will slowly drain the entire fuel tank doing this.  It starts coming out several minutes after engine is off.  I completely disassembled the carburetor, cleaned and reassembled with new gaskets and also installed new fuel hoses.  Engine started on first pull and ran fine for at least 30 minutes.  I shut it off and came back later to once again find fuel lying in the carburetor and dripping out of the air cleaner.  Any idea what could cause this?  Thanks!

Answer
Hello Bryan:

This has Become a Common Problem. The Carburetor Needle Valve is Not Stopping the Gas Flow to the Carburetor. Install a Manual Shut Off Valve in the Gas Line and Turn the Gas Off Manually when the Mower is Not in Use. I have Replaced the Needle Valves and Seats on Several Carburetors and the Problem Returns Usually Within a Few Months. The Manual Cut Off Valve is the Only Solution I have Found as of yet that Corrects the Problem. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck

Respectfully

John
