Experience Born and raised in the midwest. Started tinkering with engines when I was about 14 on my Suzuki RM-80. I began lawn mower repair at a small hardware store. I knew absolutely nothing. I read lots of repair manuals and met an older fellow who taught me many lessons. I continued working on small engines through high school and paid my way through college working on mowers at the same hardware store. Decided to get away from the midwest and mower repair so I joined the Air Force. I repaired air traffic control electronic equipment and ended up in Hawaii where I got a part time job at Small Engine Clinic. I gained a lot of experience from the Small Engine Clinic and had a blast repairing small engines. I then took the Briggs and Stratton Master Service Technician test and earned my MST. I then traveled to Wisconsin where I attended the factory update training seminar and received formal training. I received a scholarship from the Air Force and am currently pursuing another degree.

When I engage the pto and the motor is not hot it stalls and does so until the motor is good and hot. This machine has a new pto, tranny, rebuilt carb, recent tune-up, and new bearings in two out of three pulleys on the deck. At the moment it needs a new drive belt. When the motor warms up it runs fine but until that time it wants to grab when the pto is engaged and stall. Thanks in advance, Ernie

How old is the mower?
Do you have a push/flip button style PTO or is there lever you have to manually move?
I'm not sure of the age late 70's early 80's. pto style is mechanical engaged with a lever on the side. Thanks again, Ernie
Let me know.
Eric
Answer Challenging problem. Does the engine governor seem to work?
This is difficult to describe but when you engage the pto the engine RPM should decrease slightly and then regain normal speed...you should be able to hear the slight difference in RPM.
Do you hear any RPM drop when you engage the PTO? Another way to check the RPM is to cut some taller grass. The engine should decrease slightly and then regain normal speed.
