Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.) - Replacing an engine on riding lawnmower

Expert: John C. Bridgers Sr. - 7/3/2007

Question
The 18.5 Kohler in my riding lawnmower recently met its demise. I was curious if I can replace the motor with a Briggs and Stratton of a higher HP. The lawnmower itself is in good condition, and I dont see the need to buy a whole new rider. I was looking to put in a 26 HP motor onto my Craftsman rider. Will the motor mount up ok and assuming I get a new motor with a correct sized shaft, will I run into any other problems doing this?

Answer
Hello Kory:

LOL Sorry to LOL, but I Just got a Kohler 18.5hp in the Shop and the Customer wants to Replace it With a 22hp Briggs. As Long as the Crankshaft Diameter and Length is the Same and the Bolt Pattern Matches, you Should have No Problems. I have Even Drilled New Mounting Hole for Some Engine Changes. If you Drill, Make Sure the Engine is Centered. **I Don't Think this will be Involved in Your Case.** There May be Minor Changes in the Wiring, but Nothing Really Drastic. Send me the Model, Type and Code  Numbers Off Both Engines, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist you.Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck

Respectfully

John
