Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.)/No spark

Question
Hi,   My engine Briggs 295cc won't spark. What is the next step? Remove the flywheel and check the points? I have checked the spark plug on other engine and it works. All the electrical system seem to be behind the flywheel.  Thanks

Answer
Unless the engine is 20 years old or older it doesn't have points.  It's a coil problem.  If it is older than 20 you can buy a coil that will bypass the points.  If this problem is on a mower be sure to check that the safety cable is working properly before you buy a coil.
