Small Household Appliances - Older KitchenAid Unopened

Expert: Wayne Kiefer - 11/3/2009

Question
Hi Mr. Kiefer,

My husband and I have an old KitchenAid 'Multi-Function Ultra Power Mixer'- a wedding gift from back in 1993.  Here's the thing.  It's mint in the box.  I haven't even opened the original package in all the 16 years we've owned it.
Can an appliance stay safe and functional after all this time, #even if it is still in its original factory-packed condition#?  Or do they expire after a certain amount of decades.

Sorry if this is really a dumb question.  I'm just leery about all that stuff-- things expiring, wires that are tightly wound for several years, old electrical appliances catching on fire, engines shorting out, etc.  Guess I must be tightly wound, myself.  True-I'm kinda' laughing, but I am serious.
Thanks for your time.

Answer
The olny problem that you may have with this mixer is that with the grease that Kitchenaid used in their mixers in 1993.  It got stiff and did not work the best.  This should cause no problem but I would check now and then after using it to see that it is not leaking grease around where the beater is attached.  It may be just fine but some units did leak and we have to take all of the old grease out and replace it with a newer type of grease.

As far as the electrical part of the mixer goes, there should be no problem.

This mixer is much better than the new Kitchenaid units as it still has an AC motor and will last many years.

I hope you did not misunderstand me.  Please do not do anything with the grease in the machine unless it starts to leak.  It may never leak but some have is all I was saying.  Good luck.
