Small Household Appliances/4 cup Farberware Percolator
Expert: Wayne Kiefer - 7/10/2009
QuestionQUESTION: I repaired this Farberware 4 cup percolator by removing(bypassing) a component in series with the heating elements. This component was in an open circuit condition preventing the percolator from heating. Can you identify this component? It is similar in size to a diode or resistor and has marking bands much like a resistor would have. One end of the component has a cone shape tip where one of the wires exits.I want to determine if I need to replace this component, or let the percolator run without it,by finding out what its function is.I appreciate any information.
ANSWER: You have removed the heat sensitive fuse that is a protection against overheating and fire. The unit should not be used without this component. If you would like to order one to replace the old one, please call us at: 608-221-3322 We will be glad to send you one.
When you call please order a fuse for a China made Farberware coffee maker as they are the same for all sizes. Thank you.

QUESTION: Your answer seems reasonable, but when I called, the fuse was described as several inches long and a strap shape, not the size of a resistor which would be maybe 1 inch long and tubular with maybe 1/4 inch diameter. How would you describe the shape of the heat sensitive fuse you mentioned (for a China made Farberware)?
AnswerIt is about 1/4" long and 1/8" dia. with a wire lead coming out of each end of the fuse. They are rated in degrees centigrade (240 o C)
If this is what you have, call us back (608-221-3322) and give us the temp. in cent. that is printed on the cylinder of the fuse. We can supply you with the fuse and two crimp connectors. You will have to clip the wires next to the fuse and crimp the new fuse in. I only work two days so ask for Jason when you call and he should be able to help you. Thanks.
