Small Household Appliances/Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan Issue

Question
Once the fan is on, it will stop turning after a while. Sometimes it doesn't turn on, or takes a little while to spin. It is operated by a variable control speed wall switch. Is the problem with the fan (17 yrs old), or the wall switch. How can I test that? Thanks.

Answer
I would guess that the switch is not working properly.  These switches have a variable resistor in them and they burn out.  Take the wall switch off and replace it with an on-off switch and you can tell if it is the switch.
