Smashing Pumpkins - smashing pumpkins heavy metal machine

Question
I was wondering what the smashing pumpkins song heavy metal machine was about, i'm told that billy was a friend of Kurt Cobain and wrote the song about him or as a criticism of Cobain's suicide...hence the lyrics "let me die for rock and roll" and "if i were dead would my records sell.."  Is this true, if not what is the song really about?

Answer
hi! im not too sure about the kurt cobain comment, it is a possiblity,im not ruling it out!it does seem very relevant, but i was under the impression that the song is about billy confronting his own 'egotistical ways' that the media so fondly associated with him.i think he was just tryin to prove a point about the general state of the music industry at that moment in time.it seems that artists become more popular after they die, e.g cobain, hendrix, morrison.so i believe he was just tryin to highlight the issue that your music is only truely appriciated after youre gone.i mean, the pumpkins split after Machina,so maybe billy was just tryin to give people something to think about, but it seems very toungue in cheek!im not claiming to be right or anything, thats just my opinion, as billy said himself 'Um, my songs are really personal...  and... you, it's like I'd have to tell everyone the story that goes behind every song, and I just..it's kinda- it seems silly to me that I'd have to say "Well one day I was walking down the street, see, and..." [shrug] it doesn't- it wouldn't make any difference. I- and I don't- I mean, that's one of my problems with the video medium, is- is having to attach symbolism and specifics to songs because I think in some ways it's the ambiguousness of things that makes people find something in their own... life.' i hope that helps you in some way! thanks!
