I have a tiny efficiency apartment in New York and my parents want to visit for a few days. When I suggested that a hotel might be easier for everyone, they seemed offended. They said they didn't mind staying on my pullout couch, that it would be expensive for them to stay in a hotel, and so (in effect) that it would be unreasonable/uncaring to expect them to stay in a hotel. My questions are: Was it rude for my parents to expect to be able to stay in my apartment? Was I rude for suggesting that they stay in a hotel? What is the proper etiquette in this situation. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you. --Bruno
Answer Dear Bruno,
No it was not wrong to suggest that they stay in a hotel. You
do it saying "No,I won't hear of you staying here,it just would
be miserable for you and Dad. An efficiency in New York makes a
hamster cage look spacious. The Hotel Montblanc is two blocks from
me and you will be so much happier..."
Just have a ready answer/solution for any objections that you
may get.
