Topic: Social Etiquette and Good Manners

Expert: Amanda Gamble
Date: 7/3/2008
Subject: how to address a sympathy card

Question
I worked with a gentleman who passed away and would like to send a card to his wife. Should I write Mrs. John Doe or Mrs. Jane Doe or does it really matter.

Answer
Dear Mary,
She properly remains Mrs John Doe until she remarries or dies.
It does matter (although the expression of sympathy is much more
important) how you address the envelope. "Mrs. Jane Doe" is never
correct. It can be used for a divorced woman but always indicates
someone of inferior upbringing.
                               Best regards,
                                 Amanda Gamble
