Question QUESTION: dear amanda,
lately i have been receiving correspondence cards where the sender has run a quick pen line thru their initials or name at the top of the card. Is this proper usage? there is nothing that has changed in regards to their name or initials, so i wondered, is this a new custom or am i just not up on my etiquette?
thank you
sabrina
ANSWER: Dear Sabrina,
Old,old custom. It shows that the letter or note has been written
by the person and to a friend or relative. So,not penned by a social
secretary (very few people have them, but still..) and sent on a 'personal' level. He's not Major General Augustus Smyth when he
writes to you,he's just 'Uncle Gussie'.

QUESTION: dear amanda,
thank you for your explaination. Since I do not have a social sec. shuld I be crossing out my name as well when writing to friends versus business accociates or is it strictly for family and very close friends? on my stationary i have my full name, sabrina andrews wilhelm..friends call me bree or other nicknames, would that be the criteria for use? thank you and regards, sabrina
Answer Dear Sabrina,
Crossing your name out is for friends and family only. People you
are on a 'first name basis' with. For business, you need to be a
little more formal, even if they don't call you 'Ms. Andrews Wilhelm'.
Best regards,
