Social Etiquette and Good Manners - First Date - Is Housewaming Gift Appropriate (just moved into new home)

Expert: Amanda Gamble - 10/30/2009

Question
Hello Amanda,

I will be going on a first date with a guy that I know through friends.  He will be moving into his home two days before our first date.  Is it appropriate that I bring a small gift?  Perhaps a bottle of wine or champagne, or something else?  Or is it appropriate not to bring anything at all?

Thank you!!!!

Alexandra

Answer
Dear Alexandra,
Err on the side of caution and pass for now. The home will still be new for several more months yet and maybe a more appropriate time for a house warming present will come up. Right
now,I'd avoid the appearance of 'trying to hard' by giving him a gift. I understand the sentiment and you should congratulate him on his new place and ask him questions about how
he's enjoying it,etc.  But wait and see if your going to have a second date first.

Best regards,
Amanda Gamble
