Social Etiquette and Good Manners - Greetings

Expert: William Hanson - 10/21/2009

Question
My step-children walk in my home and do not acknowledge me, not a simple hello. They say hello to their mother enthusiastically. I think that the children, 8 and 10 YO boys, should say hello to me and acknowledge my existence. I find this rude and disrespectful. I have spoken to their mother and she says that she has always greeted them first and that is why they don't say hello.

Answer
Dear Michael,

I agree with you - your step-children should acknowledge you. I can see why they would want to greet their mother first but this should be an excuse for them to then forget about you. I suggest you have a serious word with your wife about this and if the problem persists you simply refuse to acknowledge the children or do anything for them until they have greeted you properly.

I hope this helps,

William Hanson.
