Question Is it inappropriate to ask guests to purchase gift cards instead of actual gifts. If it is ok to do so, how should I word it on the invitations?

Thank you for your inquiry regarding invitation etiquette. In these economical days, I think that the guests would welcome giving a gift card. Today,it is not uncommon for people to request other items for a funeral, wedding and even graduations.
So I would simply state that "Gift cards welcomed! This is the most polite and indirect way of requesting without having to say, "Gift cards preferred!" It is up to you if you want to indirectly or directly ask your guests.
