Social Etiquette and Good Manners - News stories about President Obama

Expert: Jay Remer - 10/22/2009

Question
Thank you for tis service.  It is appreciated.

I searched and found your answer with regard to speaking TO the President; etiquette is to address him as Mr. President.

My question is different.I am wondering if it is proper to refer to the current President as Mr. Obama as opposed to President Obama when an anchor is doing a news story??

It just doesn't sound right....but it may be correct.  Is it?

Answer
Dear Ms. Boyd,
Thanks or asking this good question. News anchors are not arbiters of proper etiquette or protocol and get many things wrong regularly. The current sitting president is properly referred to as President, not Mr. That's it, plain and simple, no exceptions. I hope this helps. Jay
