Social Etiquette and Good Manners - President wants to borrow bus pass

Expert: Cynthia Lett - 10/30/2009

Question
Hi,

I work at a small company (12 people).  The president of my company has asked me on multiple occasions if he could borrow my monthly bus pass for a few hours, provided he return it to me at the end of the day before I headed home.  He also promises to buy me a new pass if he misplaced it.  We are certainly not close or related and I very, very rarely interact with him in the first place.  I feel it's very inappropriate and unprofessional for someone in his position to ask his newest employee if he could borrow a bus pass, just so he can save a couple dollars.  I've been telling him I don't buy a monthly pass anymore, but am I being rude or ungrateful for my job by telling him this white lie?

Sincerely,
J

Answer
Dear Jonathan:
You are neither ungrateful for your job or wrong in your assessment of improper behavior by your boss.  He is acting inappropriately by asking anyone for their bus pass.  It would be better, however if you told him the truth and said that your bus pass is your bus pass and it is cheating the system to allow anyone else to use it.  You need to take the high road and not allow him to use you in his quest to cheat.
I would question his integrity in everything else that he does so be careful.
