Social Etiquette and Good Manners - Retirement Dinner

Expert: Jay Remer - 10/28/2009

Question
I have been invited to a small retirement dinner for a colleague that is being held at another colleague's home.  It will be catered.  Do I bring a gift to the host and hostage, such as wine?  Or do I bring nothing.
Thank you

Answer
Dear Barb,
Thanks for asking this good question. You are implying that because the party is being catered and the host is not slaving over a hot stove that a gift is not necessary. The two things are mutually exclusive. On the other hand perhaps you are thinking that a gift would be unwelcome as the caterer will take care of everything. In either case, a hostess gift is always appropriate. A small floral arrangement sent in advance would make you look like a pro. A nice bottle of wine would likely go directly to the host's wine closet and enjoyed at a later date, which would be just fine. I hope this helps answer your question. Jay
