Social Etiquette and Good Manners - signing a family card

Expert: Cynthia Lett - 10/21/2009

Question
Hello, I hope you can help me with something that has stumped me since I gave birth to my son last year.
My husband's name is Steven and we named our son Steven, Jr.
Last Christmas I was totally perplexed about how to sign our Christmas cards- "Steven, Mary and Steven Hunt, Jr." that doesn't sounds right, but neither did "Steven, Mary and Steven Jr. Hunt". I ended up doing " The Hunts, Steven, Mary and Steven Jr." I hope you may be able to offer some suggestions. Thank You!-Mary Hunt

Answer
Dear Mary:
My first response is a question.  Do you call Steven Jr. by Steven? or is it Stevie or other nickname?  If you call him by a nickname, use that when signing cards to differentiate him from his father.  If you call both your husband and your son Steven, your best signature to include all three of you is the one you are using - The Hunts - Steven,Mary and Steven, Jr.  It would also be proper to sign the card, Steven and Mary Hunt and Steven, Jr..  Children under the age of 18 don't really have any etiquette attached to them because by etiquette standards, they are not equal to adults.  I know - there are still etiquette rules that stand today but may seem out of touch with reality.  In truth their reality is common sense.

Thank you for your question.
