I started and run the International Society of Protocol & Etiquette Professionals and am considered a leader in the field. Question
Is it ever ok to sell tickets to a 40th b-day celebration like they do for stag parties? My friend will be turning 40 4/2010, he is single put very popular, and I have my own family, and just can"t see how I could invite so many people and cover the expense of having it at a hall. I know a few of his co-workers but once the word spreads,I don't want any one to feel excluded.

Dear Julie:
I am sorry but it is never OK to ask people to pay for attending a function that they have been invited to. Let me suggest that you talk to a few of his friends and together agree that you split the cost of the party. That will make all who are paying for it the hosts. If you can't find co-hosts who will contribute to the expenses, and the cost of hosting it all by yourself is too much, the only thing you can appropriately do is cancel your plans or keep it to a cost-manageable number of guests that you can easily afford to host.
