Question
Hi,

My name is Sarah and i've just moved from Pakistan to Toronto. i got a job in downtown and will start working very soon. even though i did work in Pakistan for 2 years but here i am very very nervous. the reason is that i am afraid i am going to appear awkward on the first day. My English is not very fluent and has an asian accent. i am getting very conscious of that too.  Also i fear that on the first day (since my boss said there;ll be lots of introductions) people might see how nervous i am and they might make fun of me at my back.

i would really help if you guide me on how i should be behaving at my office, how i should greet people.the one thing i dont know how to do is start conversations and continue them in English.if there are some tips for that i would really appreciate.

i just don't want people to think that i am an ill-mannered person and lack self confidence.

please help.

Sarah

Answer
Dear Sarah,
Thanks for asking this good question. I know how difficult that alone was in addition to speaking of your situation. My advice is to relax. What people will see is what will come from your heart. Everyone is nervous upon first introductions. For conversation, try to resist speaking about yourself and find out as much as you can about the other person. They will know then that you are a respectful colleague. Do not worry about your accent. Those who will judge you by it are weak. Many will find that it has a very pleasant lilt to it. Your proficiency in English will improve with time. Canadians are a warm group of people, coming from many diverse backgrounds themselves. Focus on the positive and you will be just fine. I hope this helps. Jay
