Question My niece had her heart set on attending a particular High School with her best friend. Admission to this High school is set up on a lottery system. Her best friend was chosen to attend but my nice was not and she is heart broken. she is an honor student and first in her class at her present school. Is there anything that she can do to get herself in the good graces of the school in the event there should have an opening in the near future? thank you for your help.
Answer The solution, I think, is not so much to do with etiquette to good manners, more to do with luck. If the application process was down to interview and selection panel, I would suggest that your niece was sent on a what used to be called a 'finishing course'. However, as it is simply a lottery, I would suggest that this wouldn't help in this case (although for job interviews will work wonders!) The best people to help on this are called The English Manner: www.theenglishmanner.com
However, it may be a good touch for your niece to write a letter to the High School saying how disappointed she was that she was not chosen as she had heard such good things about the school and wanted so much to contribute in the areas she is gifted in (list musical/dramatic/academic/co-curricular activities). She could then ask that if a space appears that she is reconsidered.
