Social Etiquette and Good Manners - 50th Birthday Party

Expert: Amanda Gamble - 6/21/2009

Question
Is it appropriate to invite both people of a recent divorce to a 50th birthday party if the person turning 50 is a childhood friend of one of the divorcees?

Answer
Dear Gretchen,
This is a question where there are variables that influence the
answer. It is not inappropriate to invite both people, however,if this is going to cause one or both of them some mental distress, err on the side of caution. By this I mean,'choose' the childhood friend over the spouse they are divorcing for the party invitation. If you wish to keep up your friendship with the 'other half' why not invite him or her to another function or to dinner. Now,if this is a divorce that is long over due and there is no animosity, invite them both, but give fair warning first.
                Best regards,
