Question I am setting a historical 1859 table to celebrate my states sesquicentennial. I am not clear as to whether place cards or menu card where in use in this period or when they became prevalent. Do you know? I want to be accurate and although I have searched high and low I cannot find evidence one way or the other. Please advise and thank you in advance.
Answer Dear Nancy,
Thanks for asking this interesting question. That puts things at around 1859. Although not scarce, paper would not likely have been used for the purpose of either menu cards or place cards. They would both likely be Victorian creations. So historically, leave them off. From a practical angle, they do serve a good purpose, hence their survival today. I hope this helps. Jay
