Social Etiquette and Good Manners - proper headstone punctuation for woman married twice

Expert: Amanda Gamble - 6/26/2009

Question
My Mother was married, divorced and then married again.  I would like to put all of her names on the headstone for genealogy research, as she was very interested in that herself.  What punctuation will be clear to future viewers that the first surname is her maiden, the second surname is her first married name, and the third surname is her last married name?
Thank you, Punctuationally Perplexed

Answer
Dear Punctuationally Perplexed,
   You may (correctly) either have:

          Lydia(Thomas)Watson Doe

                  or

          Lydia Thomas Watson Doe

It will be fine to break it up and put it on two or three lines if
you wish.

                  Lydia Ann
                   Thomas
                 Watson Doe

Most people will understand that women generally live longer and
often remarry. Members of the family (in generations to come) will
either know or wish to know the events of your dear mother's life
and will investigate on their own.

                                     Best regards,
                                       Amanda Gamble
