Social Etiquette and Good Manners - tomstone etiquette

Expert: Amanda Gamble - 6/30/2009

Question
our son was living with us at the time of his death.he was separated from his wife off and on for about 1 yr.My question is ,on his headstone should it read husband of wife name put first ,or son of ,then our names and his brothers and sisters first .

Answer
Dear Jo,
Please put the wife's name on the marker if they have children. Not
knowing the outcome of their troubles doesn't negate what they did have
together.

If they were childless and you are paying for the tombstone, feel
free to put "son of" first.

Please know how sorry I am for your loss,
                                   Amanda Gamble
