Social Etiquette and Good Manners - passengers

Expert: Jay Remer - 7/8/2009

Question
I have a four door car and I want to know if two men and one woman are the passengers where should the woman sit if she is not the driver.  In the front or the back?

Answer
Dear Steve,
Thanks for asking this good question. In most cases, I tend to invite the woman to sit up front. In a formal situation the 'best seat' is right rear. That puts the lady at the curb. Now, if someone outranks her, they get that seat regardless. Informal situations are more relaxed and I think a woman alone in the back seat is unfriendly and lacking chivalry. I hope this helps. Jay
