Social Etiquette and Good Manners/death

My very good elderly friend died. Should I go to the house and express my condolences to the widow, or is attendance at the formal visitation adequate?

Dear George:
My condolences on the loss of your friend. For most relationships a visit to the wake is sufficient but since this man was a very good friend, his widow would probably appreciate a personal visit in a week or so. Make sure she knows you are coming so she is prepared.
I suggest you attend the wake as well. Most people are very kind for a day or two around the time of the funeral but then ignore the grieving after that.
She would appreciate the visit when things get quiet again.
