Question
I have a thank you letter to send to a retired embassador. How do I address it?

Answer
Dear Debi,
Ambassador to the United Nations or to a country? An
ambassador from the United States or from a foreign
country?
You need to call people from the United States "The
Honorable" on the envelope and add (ret.) behind the
name. In the greeting address them as Mr or Madam
Ambassador.
With foreign ambassadors it's His or Her Excellency
and the same (ret.) behind the name and you may use
either "Excellency" or Mr. or Madam Ambassador in the
greeting.
 I hope this helps!
               Best regards,
                   Amanda Gamble
