Social Etiquette and Good Manners - Public display of affection

Expert: Amanda Gamble - 7/21/2004

Question
What is the general rule about kissing and or touching in public?  Is it at all acceptable?  Sometimes when I'm with my boyfriend at the shops or something I get really evil looks from people if we kiss etc.

Answer
Dear Kate,
Ah! The wonderful but much maligned PDA! Wonderful if
you're the one happy and in love, oblivious to everyone
around you, kissing up a storm. Maligned by those who are
not in the first blush of a romance and are just trying to
buy a gallon of milk fergoshsakes!
Here's the thing--it can get so intense as to be deeply
uncomfortable to those around you. They don't know where
to look,it feels a little perverted to be witnessing so
personal an act. Good manners dictate that you be very
considerate of those around you and try to make them feel
as comfortable as possible. So therefore, enthusiastic
PD of A are....not acceptable.
Holding hands,an arm across a shoulder and brief (BRIEF!)
kisses hello and goodbye ARE acceptable.
I now encourage you and your boyfriend to look wildly
about in all directions, duck behind the cardboard cutout
of Juan Valdez and do what you're going to do anyway. Just
because you're being considerate by not indulging your
passion in front of other shoppers doesn't mean you can't
have some fun.
                    JUST BE DISCREET!
                                Best regards,
                                   Amanda Gamble
