Question
What are the various factors that contribute the construction of group identity? or what are the circumstances under which group identity can lead to violence?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Abdi,

The factors include:

1) Similar physical characteristics

2) Similar socio-economic characteristics

3) Similar treatment by others

4) Similar grievances

5) Similar sexual, religious, or other "internal" characteristics (not visible to observers)

Group identity can lead to violence either being inflicted ON the group, or BY the group. In either case, humans as a species tend to resort to violence if it seems to be the fastest or best way to achieve goals. That is, when people feel that other options will fail, but that achievement of the goals is an absolute necessity.

I hope this helps!
