Softball - Advancing a base

Expert: Tom Mielke - 10/8/2009

Question
Girl on first and one batter. The batter hits the ball in the outfield. Girl on first goes to second and starts to advance to third. The defence throw the ball to third and went into the dug out. The batter only went to first and was starting to advance to second. My qeustion is ; does the base runner that was slowly advancing to second get third even after I call dead ball?

Answer
It depends on where the runner was when the throw was made.  Other than on a pitch, when I thrown ball goes into dead ball territory, the runners receive two bases from where they were at at the time of the throw.

If the runner had passed first base at the time of the throw, then yes.  Otherwise no.

Tom
