Softball - at bat question

Expert: Tom Mielke - 10/19/2009

Question
Hitter hits deep fly ball to outfield, outfielder touches, but does not catch. Girl is safe at first base. Does this count as an at bat? Does it count as a hit?

Answer
In other words is this an error?  This is a judgement call by the scorekeeper.  Just because the ball hit the girls glove does not make it an error.  If she did everything she could to catch the ball, didn't screw up, and the ball went off the tip of her glove then no error, score a hit and an at bat.

If the ball should have been caught with normal effort, and it is not, then this is an error, score an at bat, but no hit.  If you are not sure, score it a hit!
