I have very extensive experience in MASA State Championship and ASA national qualifying tournament play both as an umpire and an Umpire-In-Chief. Question With Runners on 1st and 2nd and two outs the batter hit a short fly ball just on to the outfield grass. Our shortstop was playing behind the baseline between 2nd and 3rd and back peddled to catch the fly ball. While she was going backwards she collided with the runner who was going from 2nd to 3rd. Should the runner be out and can an umpire award the out for a fly ball that would have been caught?
Answer Hi Dan,
we have interference, runner out, if in the umpire's opinion it was an attempt to prevent a double play and occurs before the runner is put out the immediate trailing runner is also out. Since there were already 2 outs here it is of no significance.
