Question
Runner on 1st...ground ball hit to 2nd base..fielder fields the ball in the baseline....what determines the baseline distance that the runner has to avoid the tag from 2nd baseman? Is there a distance or is it a judgement call by the umpire that the runner tried to avoid the tag? Is there a rule number in the rule book that explains your answer?

Answer
Dave,

One thing to remember here, the definition of a base line.  The base line is not defined by any lines on the field or a direct line from one base to the next.  The base line is the direct line from the current position of the runner to the base they are running to.  There is only a defined base path when the defense is attempting to tag the runner.  ASA 2009 Section 1

If the umpire judges that you vary more than three feet from this line to avoid a tag, you are out.  ASA 2009 8.7.A

Please do not rate me, good or bad for coaching responses. There is to much subjective matter to the coaching area as opposed to rules/scoring.
