Softball/men's fastpitch speed

I attended the World Cup in OKC this past summer and was talking with the Pitching Coach for the Canadian team. He clocked (Jugs Hi $$ Radar Gun) the highest speed of men at the Gold Cup and 71 mph was the fastest. He said that of all the men pitchers in the world the fastest is a young man on the Canadian team who has thrown 85 mph.

100 mph is beyond reason!

I have been to the Batting cages where they have

a softball cage. the speed was between 60 and 65 MPH. I played fast-pitch softball in the Air Force and the best pitcher's speed was a blur

compared with that. The woman on team USA generally are in the 60-65 MPH range with their fastest pitch. That is like seeing a basketball

being thrown at you compared with the fast men's

fast ball.

Top speed for a mens fastpitch softball is in the low to mid 80's. But they are pitching from 46 ft as compared to 60'6" in baseball. So that means that a softball thrown at 85 mph is the equivalent to a baseball being pitched at 111.79 mph. Hit that.

No fastpitch pitcher has thrown over 100 mph.  the best in the world may be able to hit 86-87 mph, but that is about the top speed there has been.  no where near 100.

I think the fastest is around 87 mph.The rubber is 46 feet from home plate when the pitcher let's go of the ball he would be at around 38feet. (this is the pitching distance for men)

Back in 1981 during the MLB strike, the Los Angeles Times ran a banner story on the sports page about a guy (Mark Smith)that was playing for the Camarillo Kings in the Western Softball Congress.  He was clocked at 102 mph.  There was another guy (Ty Stofflet) that Sports Illustrated did in the 80's and he was clocked at over 100mph also.
