South Africa - cost of living in Joburg
Expert: Stuart James - 10/28/2009
Question Hello,
I am considering a move to Jo'burg from the USA but noticed a huge salary differential. The job I am considering pays about $32,000. I am not sure how far such a salary takes one in Jo'burg. Any ideas? I guess a breakdown of reasonable costs for rent (single person), food, transport, and taxes would help. I appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thank you!
Answer Hi Ade
Sorry for the delay i am sort of on vacation but i hope the below helps you out:
For tax visit the website http://www.oldmutual.co.za/markets/south-african-budget-2009/income-tax-calculat... this will give you a good idea of take home pay for you.
In terms of expenses that is quite hard as it does depend on your personal taste.
For your main outgoings:
Rent - http://www.privateproperty.co.za/5_property_to_let/2_gauteng/19_johannesburg_cbd...
this will provide you with some examples but i would guess - R4,000 - R6,000
Food - i have asked around and most single guys seem to say between R1,500 and R2,000 for food and other household stuff.
Transport - public i could not tell you but i would imagine it is similar to cape town and inexpensive. Whilst petrol is quite cheap cars are not and second hand ones to seem very expensive to the immigrant arriving.
Is medical insurance part of your package?
If not bank on another R1,000 to R3,000 per month depending on the level of cover you want.
Let me know if you need any thing else and good luck with the move!
Regards
