Space and Astronomy for Kids/comet

I just saw a new video on the internet that showed a comet travaling through space . They said the tail is 40,000 miles long . Why is there a tail if there is no atmospher in space ? Thanks

Hello Bob...and thanks for using AllExperts
As a comet enters the inner solar system, it's warmed by the sun. Due to this warming, gases and dust are literally boiled off the comet and swept away from the direction of the sun by the solar wind which can be thought of as a kind of "atmosphere."
