Dear Paul, could you please tell me why the sun goes up and down in the sky every day instead of just going from side to side as Earth spins? Thank you.

The answer to your question is that the Earth spins from east to west. Imagine what the path of the sun would look like if Earth rotated from north to south or south to north; then it would appear to move completely differently than it actually does.
