About Jared Romey
Expertise
I can answer questions on living abroad for the first time, on studying a language for the first time, and general questions on the Spanish language. I can also answer questions on Puerto Rican slang and life in Puerto Rico. Basic Spanish translation questions would also not be a problem.

Experience
I am a non-native Spanish speaker that learned the language as an adult, so I have extensive experience studying and learning Spanish (I am now fluent). I have also studied German and Portuguese to lesser degrees, so I am qualified to discuss "How to Learn a Language."

I have lived in Chile, Argentina and Puerto Rico since 1997.

Publications
1. "Speaking Boricua", a book published on Puerto Rican slang, 2004.
2. "Speaking Phrases Boricua", published in 2005, Puerto Rican sayings and idioms (refranes in spanish).
3. "Speaking Argento", published 2009, about Argentine spanish slang. 4. "Speaking Chileno", scheduled for early 2010, about Chilean spanish slang.

Education/Credentials
-Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science
-MBA in International Business
-extensive Spanish study (hundreds of class hours) on everything from grammar and history to phonetics

Spanish Culture - Boricua Language

Question
QUESTION: Is castilion language the same as Boricua language?

ANSWER: Castille was a region of Spain while Boricua refers to anyone from Puerto Rico.  Officially both places speak Spanish, although the dialects are extremely different: in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

Boricua is not a language of any kind.  It is a creative way that I have  used in the title of my books to describe the Puerto Rican Spanish idiosincracies.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: In college they offer to teach spanish, allthough the spanish they teach is Casitlion, I want to learn the spanish dialect spoken in Puerto Rico! Are there any books or cd's on the internet I can use! such as Rosetta stone but for the spanish language people in Puerto RIco speak?

Answer
There really is not a lot of information available about Puerto Rican Spanish.  Obviously I can suggest two books that I have written (available on www.speakingboricua.com), but other than that, there are no CDs or anything like that available, that I know of.

Generally I can tell you that if you first learn Castillion spanish then it will be a lot easier for you adapt to Puerto Rican, or any other country's, Spanish.  The Spanish you will learn in college will be extremely useful for you in learning Puerto Rican slang.

The only other options I can suggest are to set up conversation classes with native Puerto Ricans living in your area, or reading the Puerto Rican newspapers on the internet.

There is a website called www.jergasdehablahispana.org that will also have some Puerto Rican vocabulary.

Finally, I am working on creating a website to help you out with exactly what you are asking, but it will not be available for several more months.

Sorry I couldn't help more!
