There is a Spanish song called Haz Conmigo Lo Que Quieras and there is a book called Sea Libre Donde Esté. Both of these titles begin with a command, and they are both followed by the subjunctive. Why are these commands followed by the subjunctive?
Thank you,
Mark
ANSWER: Hi Mark,
The command followed by the subjunctive is because it is what the person hopes for.

QUESTION: So, Lorenzo, would all commands in Spanish be followed by the subjunctive? I'm asking this because all commands are really expressing some form of desire on the part of the speaker or writer: Eat this when you go there! ( a restaurant) -- as an example. !Come este cuando usted vaya alla'!
And thanks so much again.
It's beginning to click for me!

Answer Yes. There is no such thing as an I form command. Even if you give yourself a command, you pretend that you are someone else, and use the 2nd person. There are no 3rd person commands either. If you want to make a third person command, you must use the subjunctive in order to relay the command through another person.
