His sympathies with the Nazi regime, he joined the party in 1935, earning inclusion in the Gottbegnadeten-List (List of Insiders) compiled by Joseph Goebbels. He also attended the wedding of Hermann Goering and Emy.

Towards the end of the Second World War the Russians raided his villa in Wannsee in Berlin. He was arrested and deported to Russia, first to Moscow and then Leningrad.

On his release he returned via Stockholm, first to Zurich, where he worked as a chemist until he settled in Vienna, resuming his career in 1949 at the Vienna State Opera and the Viennese Volksoper.
