Special Children/Aspergers Syndrom

Question
I am not sure if you will be able to answer this question but I figured it couldnt hurt to ask.
I have a sister who is 16 and they think she might have Aspergers Syndrome.  I need some information on this such as what are the symptoms they are looking at, and types of treatments.  She also has seizures and is actually only on the level of a 3rd grade education wise.
I would greatly appreciate any information you could give me.
Thank you
John

Answer
Dear John,

Good for you to care enough about your sister to ask. Aspergers Syndrome is a form of Autism. Symptoms can include not being able to be normally socially for example little or no eye contact, not enjoying contact, not being able to share excitement or other emotions. Secondly some type of repetitive motion for example hand flapping or getting upset when there is a change in routine. Usually there is not a cognitive delay meaning it would not be why your sister is still at the third grade level. It also would not have to do with the seizures. Both of those conditions can happen with Aspergers but they are not part of the syndrome.

Here is a link that may give you greater information: http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/

It sounds like your sister should have multiple diagnosis and you are very right to question. Often the one chosen is the convenient one not always the correct one.

This is not my specialty so I hope it was helpful. If you are concerned about your sister's educational rights let me know and I may be more helpful there.
