Special Diets - Foods low in Potassium for a Diabetic
Expert: Melissa Anderson - 2/27/2008
Question I am a Registered Nurse, and I work in Clinical Research. I have a patient that is having a problem with high potassium. Her doctor has suggested that she eats foods low in potassium, but she is concerned that the foods I have printed out for her to chose from are high in sugar and carbohydrates, and will cause problems with her diabetes. Can you suggest some foods that are not only low in potasium but also will not be problematic for a diabetic? Thank you!
Answer Skip,
She's right, carbs and diabetes don't mix. If the potassium restriction is strict, then she's probably going to need to see a dietician. Potassium can hide in unexpected foods and it can be difficult for patients to follow a low-potassium diet without a few sessions with the dietician.
