Special Diets - raw foods/veganism

Expert: Chef Jenny Ross - 5/28/2009

Question
Hi, I have been a vegetarian for over 7 years, and I was once Vegan for 6 months. More recently, I have started eating dairy products again, and unfortunately I have gained some weight back, as well as the addiction!! I desperately wish to follow a Vegan diet again. I felt the happiest and healthiest back then. I have also read various books about the raw foods diet and detox cleanses, as well as watched the Gerson Miracle documentary. Is there a surefire way to give up my dairy cravings and go back to living a Vegan lifestyle for good? I have interest in these dietary choices for health as well as environmental/animal-cruelty reasons.

Answer
Hello Nicole-
The living foods diet/lifestyle is a very vibrant and energetic way of living- it provides clarity, stamina, healthy hair-skin-nails, overall health, optimal weight, moral integrity and more...is it a sure fire answer? Well that is up to you... I have found that being a former addict of cheese and the like that I have done very well on this diet the past decade with very little craving for what I knew before- when and if they do crop up they are usually emotional and tied to a memory versus and actual "craving". There are many healthy and flavorful options for someone like yourself in the living foods diet and the process is a simple one. Yes you will do well going through some elements of detox in the beginning and then you want to educate yourself with great recipes and techniques that you will enjoy. That is the easiest way to stay healthy and satisfied eating this way. If you want to go 100% raw that is great, if you are looking to go say 80% I would recommend eating a whole foods diet consisting of nothing processed and no flours, etc. If you'd like more information/counseling on a transitional diet or to join us at the restaurant or one of our classes please e-mail me at jenny@shop118degrees.com and I would be happy to see what more detailed information I can provide. I can say thought that living this way has brought me incredible health and such a vibrant lifestyle that I think everyone should have the opportunity to live this way- it's fun, it feels good and it's good for the planet- Hope that helps!
Peace and Blessings
Chef Jenny
