Special Diets - Hydroxycut

Expert: Melissa Anderson - 6/6/2009

Question
I was taking hydroxycut supplements when my heart rate went up and became noticeable.  I stopped taking the supplements, but my heart rate continued to be elevated, even when I stopped.  I have been recently diagnosed with hyperthyroid disease.

I am wondering, can hydroxycut cause hyperthryoid?  How could I find out?

A

Answer
Anna,
One of the main reason diet pills are so dangerous is that the manufacturers don't have to see if the pills have any side effects before putting them on the market. Because pills like Hydroxycut are outside of FDA territory, they can have literally anything in them. Diet pills have been found to contain mercury, lead, and arsenic. That's why, even if there's an herb or vitamin out there that does help you lose weight, you should NEVER take over the counter supplements-they usually contain multiple ingredients and the safety is not known.
So, you'll never really know if Hydroxycut caused your new health problem, but it very likely is related. Your hyperthyroid will require lifelong treatment and possibly surgery or radiation... and neither the government nor the makers of Hydroxycut will ever admit it, or do anything about it. All you can do is warn everyone you know that such products are DANGEROUS.
